Registered users can do a variety of different things on a WordPress driven site. The various elements available to the user are determined by their user level.

Summary of Roles

• Administrator - Somebody who has access to all the administration features
• Editor - Somebody who can publish posts, manage posts as well as manage other people’s posts, etc.
• Author - Somebody who can publish and manage their own posts
• Contributor - Somebody who can write and manage their posts but not publish posts
• Subscriber - Somebody who can read comments/comment/receive news letters, etc.

By default most blogs are set up for Subcriber roles.  They have the ability to read comments and write them as well.

For your blog site the more interaction you can get with your registered users the better.

There are polls, surveys, and many things you can do.  I personally just blog of things that interest me and that I think my users will get value from.  Others sometimes like to speak their mind in order to stir up
some type of controversy.   Not a bad way of getting comments to your site and building loyal readers.

This is my first question type of post and I can see it benefit you, my reader, as the answers given can be used immediately on your sites.

DO yourself a favor and use Google’s keyword tool to pull up dozens and dozens of keywords that people are searching for in your particular niche. For instance: You are starting a blog on Fantasy Football. Use those two keywords in Google’s keyword tool to see a huge list of other common search terms that people are searching for. This will give you key knowledge of what words to use in stuff like, the title of your blog, the main text and links in your blog.

When choosing the subject of your blog, you will want to pick a subject that you are pretty passionate about, especially if you are a beginner. The reason behind this is because picking a subject that you have knowledge in will put you on the fast track to making blog money and, since you know what you are talking about, people will want to come back to your blog on a consistent basis. Once you are a blogging expert, which could take as little as a couple days, you can then branch out into subjects that might be profitable to you, because you will be able to learn them fairly quickly. Did you know that you can make money online writing blogs? Yes it is true and some have even made up to six figures a month. It doesn’t necessarily mean you can do it nor does it mean you cannot do it for it simply depends on your attitude. Creating a blog is the easiest thing on earth. Within a matter of few minutes you can create a blog in blogpsot. But the challenge lies in continuously working on it, spending time in getting content through articles, latest updates in your field and posting new information for the readers. Here are a few tips to make money by writing blogs.

1. Identify your niche: I have said this in my previous articles and I am again repeating it here. It is very important for you to identify your niche and have a strong passion for it. Unless you have a strong interest, you will have no momentum in updating your blog. First find out if your niche has a market and if it has, do research on the specifics of the niche. Here are some fields that are doing well in today’s market

Avoid going for Google Adsense banners as research has shown that they are consistently overlooked by the viewers. Make sure that you ad blends well with your blog layout. Match the title color of the ad with the color of your text in blog and use very light colors for the content and url so that the Ad title stands out. Don’t clutter your ads at the top of the page and expect the reader to scroll down to read the content. The first one third of the page is very precious for the reader, so it is always better to let the content take preference to ads.

4. Advertise your blog to friends and relevant networks: A good way to advertise your blog may be to simply send an email with your blog link to your friends and colleagues. Another way would be to use your bloglink as a default signature in forum postings. Make sure that your postings are valuable in those respective blogs or else you will just be one more spammer. Write articles on squidoo and hub pages and generate traffic to your blog.

5. Affiliate Marketing: Add affiliate links to the products that you choose to promote. Be careful of the products you promote because you want to make sure that you are selling genuine products and don’t fall for the get rich trap. What goes around comes around is the saying. Never resort to unethical affiliate marketing, because it is never good for the business. Always put yourself in the shoes of the buyer and think once, twice, thrice before selling or promoting a product.

My Personal Income Streams

As an update to this post I’ve more recently written one on How I make Money Blogging which highlights the most profitable ways that I use blogs to generate income.

How do bloggers make money from blogs?

I’ve been reflecting this week about the amazing diversity of opportunities that are opening up for bloggers to make money from blogging.

I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to make money from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.

The wonderful thing is that this is becoming easier and easier to do 2005 has seen many options opening up. I thought I’d take a look at some of the methods that bloggers are currently using to make money through blogs.

Income Streams for Bloggers - How to Make Money Blogging

Advertising Programs - Perhaps the most obvious changes in the past few months have been with the addition of a variety of viable advertising options for bloggers looking to make money from their blogs. The most common way bloggers seem to earn money online is via the contextual ad program from Google - Adsense. A more recent addition that many are using successfully are Chitika’s eMiniMalls and WidgetBucks, Text Link Ads.

Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, DoubleClick, Tribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, Pheedo, TextAds, Bidvertiser, Fastclick and Value Click (to name just some of the options) and there is a smorgasbord of options. Of course there is more to come with MSN Adcenter and YPN both in beta testing and with a variety of other advertising system currently in development (YPN is only available to US publishers).

Lastly there’s BlogAds - one of the first blog specific ad networks.

RSS Advertising - The past 12 months have seen some advances in RSS Advertising also. I’m yet to hear of any bloggers making big money blogging through it to this point - but as improvements are made to the ad programs exploring this I’m sure we’ll start to see examples of it being profitable.

Sponsorship - In addition to the array of advertising programs that are available to join there is a growing awareness in the business of the value and opportunity that exists for them to advertise directly on blogs. I’m hearing more and more examples of this and have been fortunately to have a couple of ad campaigns of my own in the past month - one with Adobe a couple of weeks ago and another just completed with Ricoh for a new digicam over at my Digital Camera Blog. These are not isolated cases - as I say I know of many blogs exploring sponsorship with advertisers at present and suspect we’ll see more of it in the year ahead. Sponsorship is also happening on a post by post basis with some bloggers being paid to write on certain topics by companies - either in one off or a regular fashion - and they are able to make big money from their blogs doing so.

Affiliate Programs - There are larger affiliate programs like Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction but also literally thousands of others from the large to the very small.

Digital Assets - Increasing numbers of bloggers have been developing other digital assets to support and add revenue streams to their blogs. By this I mean that I’m increasingly seeing e-books, courses and tele-seminars being run by bloggers. My recent foray into this with the first series of the six figure blogging course that Andy and I ran a few weeks ago and have just released the study version of. This type of activity will only increase in future - in fact this week I’ve seen numerous examples of bloggers running courses.

Blog Network Opportunities - with the rise in popularity of Blog Networks - bloggers are also being presented with more places to earn an income from their blogging - by writing for and with others. While it might be difficult to get a writing gig with one of the bigger networks - there are plenty who are always asking for new bloggers to join and who are willing to pay bloggers using a variety of payment models. While there are distinct advantages of blogging for yourself - blogging for an established network who will handle a lot of the set up/promotion/admin/SEO etc has it’s advantages also. More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as additional income streams.

Business Blog Writing Opportunities - as blogging has risen in it’s profile as a medium more and more businesses are starting blogs. Many of these companies have internal staff take on blogging duties - but an increasing number of them are hiring specialist bloggers to come on and run their blogs. I know of a number of bloggers who in the past month or two have been approached for such paid work. Check out Bloggers for Hire if you’re looking for this type of work.

Non Blogging Writing Opportunities - Also becoming more common are bloggers being hired to write in non blogging mediums. Manolo’s recent coup of a column in the Washington Post is just one example of this as bloggers are increasingly being approached to write for newspapers, magazines and other non blog websites. Along side this is the rise of bloggers as published book authors - this is to the extent that one blogger I spoke with this week complained to me that they were one of the few bloggers than they knew who didn’t have a book deal!

Donations - Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a part of blogging for years now but this last year saw a number of bloggers go full time after fund raising drives. Perhaps the most high profile of these was Jason Kottke of kottke.org who through the generosity of his readership was able to quit his job and become a full time blogger.

Flipping Blogs - Also more common in 2005 was the practice of ‘Blog Flipping’ - or selling of blogs. This has happened both on an individual blog level (I can think of about 20 blogs that sold this year) but also on a network level (the most obvious of these being the 8 figure sale of Weblogs Inc to AOL).

Merchandising - My recent attempt to sell ProBlogger.net T-shirts wasn’t a raging success, but it is an example of how an increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like Cafepress. While I didn’t have a lot of success with merchandising - quite a few larger blogs are seeing significant sales - especially blogs with a cult following. I’m not at liberty to discuss details - but I know of one largish blog which will see sales over $20,000 in merchandise for the calendar year of 2005.

Consulting and Speaking - While it has been popular for established consultants to add blogs to their businesses we’re also starting to see bloggers with no consulting background able to make money by charging readers for their time in consulting scenarios BECAUSE of the profile that their blogs have built them. Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert. I spoke to one blogger last month who charges himself out at over $200 an hour for speaking and consulting work - his area of expertise was something that he knew little about 18 months ago - but through his blog he’s become a leader in his field and a minor celebrity in his industry.

This is the way bloggers are…

You want to make more money than Donald Trump online, but you aren’t doing the things that make people money online. I’m about to tell you what those things are.You’re afraid to put your advertisements in front of your reader’s faces because it’s rude in your mind. In effect, you’re setting the tone for how people perceive the value of information on the internet.

Not only do you make little money this way… you’re so concerned with your reader’s comfort that you’re influencing them to devalue your information. If you don’t believe in your posts enough to slap an ad above the fold, then your info has less perceived value. As legendary copywriter Gary Bencivenga says in his intro to Bencivenga Bullets, his Bullets won’t be free for long because people devalue free things and he has too much respect for his teachings to do that.

You’re probably even afraid readers are going to perceive that you are just in it for the money. Well, you are aren’t you? That’s what I’m in it for. I’ll be honest. The #1 reason why this blog exists is to make my pockets fatter. That’s why my ads are right in your face and I have an opt-in form. Everything in life is a business if you think about it.

…If you’re so concerned about driving away the penny pinchers from your blog, know they aren’t going to give you money anyway.

You’re not making as much money off your traffic as possible, and it could be just because you don’t know how. Most all bloggers never get to the point where they can sell advertising space. They just don’t get enough traffic, but listen…

It’s possible to make more than those blogs from the small amount of traffic you’re getting right now. Ask yourself “How much money are you making off your blog per 100 unique visitors?” Say you get 6 AdSense clicks and it comes out to be $2. That’s not enough money to buy a Red Bull. What if I told you that I know people who make $194 per 100 visitors to their website and that’s just average?

The friends I’m talking about are internet marketers who sell $97 digital info products like mp3s, videos, and ebook courses. They convert at 2% and that’s an average conversion rate.

What does $194 per 100 visitors have to do with my blog?

The way you perceive blogging for the most part is all wrong. Instead of thinking of your blog as your product or service to others, you can think of it as a vehicle for driving readers to your real product.There are two things that happen here:

1) You still make a little money off your current advertising.

2) You’re now making more money than you thought possible from selling your own digital information product or service, or by selling another’s product as an affiliate, like with ClickBank.

And here’s how it’s going to work.

Read this because anyone who already knows what I’m about to say and doesn’t act on it should be put in the loony bin.If you don’t know right now, I’m talking about e-mail marketing. And before I tell you about that, there’s something else you need to hear.

Essentially we’re talking about internet marketing here and why the traditional way of thinking about blogging for money is a joke.

Here’s the reason why.

Because I’d be willing to bet a kidney that percentage-wise more bloggers are failing to earn money online than internet marketers… and, and… the top bloggers like Darren Rowse and even Perez Hilton aren’t making even close to as much money as the top internet marketers.

…Even though internet marketing costs nearly the same to operate as blogging.

Prove it jerk!

First of all, I make 400% more money from my blogs as I used to.Secondly, here’s a real example… By internet marketing Frank Kern is responsible for bringing in $23 million dollars in one day. He got to keep a million of it. Have you ever heard of a blogger who has made $1,000,000 in one day?

So here’s the thing.

It’s logical to start internet marketing with your blog right away. Not only do internet marketers make more money online for often less effort, you can start internet marketing from your blog today. And this is the type of internet marketing that you’re going to use, and it just so happens that this is the best type of internet marketing.

And that is…

Of course…

E-mail marketing, which you can implement today. You can e-mail market with your own digital info products or by being an affiliate with ClickBank.Whenever someone comes across your blog on any page, there will be a form called an opt-in form where visitors can put in their name and e-mail address to receive your free gift (like a PDF report or ebook).

When someone opts-in to your list, he/she will get an automatic e-mail giving a link where he can download your freebie. Now you have his permission to e-mail him whatever you want and he can unsubscribe at any time. Each of your follow-up automatic e-mails should have valuable content, but from time to time you should send offers for various info products.

When you have an e-mail list, you can turn them into repeat customers giving you even $20 to $40 commissions every day… instead of you making $2 per day with your ads. You’ll need to pay monthly for an auto-responder service like AWEBER, which is a drop in the bucket compared to how valuable it can be for your income.

Let’s further my case.

Okay, you know what I think about traditional blogging mentality VS internet marketing mentality. But I want to make my point crystal clear. I want to really drive it home for you.Blogging the way everyone says you should blog is extremely hard work, few make it to the big leagues, and it’s just not as efficient for making money online as an entire internet marketing plan.

For example, instead of commenting everywhere and trying to get your posts on blogs as a guest blogger, submit one article to iSnare and watch your article circulate throughout the internet forever, giving you traffic and backlinks.

Here’s another point. Some marketers who make high double-figures, six-figures, and even million dollar incomes don’t even have that popular of blogs. That’s because blogging is just plain harder to be successful at than internet marketing. Take for example, Andrew Hansen, author of the bestselling ebook “Niche Marketing On Crack”, Eric Graham the Conversion Doctor, Daniel Taylor, and others.

Internet marketing and blogging haven’t really merged yet in the grand scheme of things. I think, though, that they’d make the perfect marriage. You should give it a try starting today.
